When someone asks about a standard size sink drain, they usually want one simple answer: what part do I buy so this sink stops leaking and I do not spend Saturday making three trips to the hardware store. The annoying part is that plumbing labels are only half the story. The sink opening, the tailpiece, and the trap all have to play nice together, and old houses love to hide one weird adapter that ruins the whole plan. If you have ever opened a vanity cabinet and found two chrome tubes, a plastic slip nut, and a mystery washer from 1998, you already know the drill.
How a standard size sink drain is measured
A standard size sink drain is not one universal number. In real houses, the common bathroom lavatory drain is 1 1/4-inch nominal, while many kitchen and utility sinks land at 1 1/2-inch nominal. Those numbers are nominal, which means the parts do not always measure exactly that way with a tape. The important thing is matching the drain flange, the tailpiece, and the trap size so the joints seal without forcing anything.
If you are replacing parts, look at three spots: the opening at the sink, the vertical tube under it, and the P-trap. A sink drain kit might include a flange, a tailpiece, a stopper assembly, and a gasket set, but it will not fix a cracked sink body or a rusted steel trap arm. That is where people get burned. They buy the shiny new kit, then discover the house still has a mismatched elbow from three owners ago.
The clean way to shop is to pull the old parts, measure them, and compare the thread style and slip-joint size before you leave the aisle. That beats guessing every time.
Bathroom sinks and vanity drains
Bathroom sinks are where the size confusion starts. Most vanities use a 1 1/4-inch drain assembly with a pop-up stopper or lift rod. Many of those sinks have an overflow opening, so the drain body needs the matching overflow holes or the sink will drain badly and gurgle like a straw in the bottom of a soda cup. If the sink is a pedestal or a wall-hung unit from a builder-grade package, the drain parts are usually simple and cheap. A decent replacement drain from Oatey, Watco, or Keeney often runs in the $15 to $40 range, depending on finish and material.
Material matters more than people think. Chrome-plated brass lasts better than bargain plastic in a tight vanity cabinet where cleaners, humidity, and slow leaks all hang around. I have opened plenty of bathrooms where the visible trim looked fine, but the nut under the sink had split and stained the cabinet floor. That is a small leak until it is not.

If you are reusing the faucet and just fixing the drain, make sure the stopper style matches the sink depth. A shallow bowl and a deep bowl do not need the same stopper travel, and forcing the wrong one is how you end up with a drain that never seals right.
Kitchen and utility sinks are a different animal
Kitchen sinks usually use a basket strainer at the bowl and then step down to 1 1/2-inch plumbing under the cabinet. If there is a garbage disposal, the opening is larger at the sink, but the discharge side still ties into the same basic drain layout. A disposal uses its own flange and gasket system, so do not buy a basket strainer and hope it works. It will not.
Utility and laundry sinks split the difference. Some are 1 1/2-inch all the way through, while newer tubs and deeper utility sinks can be built for 2-inch connections. The trick is to trust the actual fixture, not the generic label on the shelf. If you are working in a basement laundry area, this is where bad assumptions cost real time. I have seen a perfectly good utility sink sit unusable for a week because somebody grabbed a bathroom drain kit for a laundry tub and then tried to make the trap line up with duct tape-level optimism.
For a basic kitchen or utility replacement, budget roughly $20 to $60 for the drain hardware and another $10 to $30 if you need extra tailpieces, slip-joint washers, or a disposal flange. That is still cheaper than paying for a second outage in the middle of a remodel.
When old piping makes the job messy
The drain itself is rarely the only problem in an older house. Galvanized pipe corrodes from the inside, cast iron gets rough at the joints, and old chrome traps rust just enough to leak while still looking serviceable from the front. That is why a new sink can still smell bad or drain slow. The failure is often downstream of the bowl.
If the trap arm is too high, too low, or too far off center, the new drain assembly will fight you the whole way. I have had to shorten tailpieces, add a tubular extension, and swap a trap adapter just to get a vanity sink centered and sealed. None of that is exotic work. It is just the boring part of plumbing that keeps water in the pipes where it belongs.
This is also where a lot of homeowners overbuy. You do not need a fancy specialty kit if the problem is a bent washer, a wrong-sized nut, or a corroded slip joint. A standard compression trap set, a small tube of plumber’s putty where the manufacturer allows it, and the right adapter usually solve the issue. The expensive part is time lost to guessing.

Buying the right parts the first time
Before you shop, pull the old drain apart and bring the pieces with you. The sink opening, the tailpiece diameter, and the trap connection tell you more than the box ever will. If the old chrome is pitted but the sizes are right, you can usually replace only what is worn out and keep the rest. That is the cheapest clean fix, and it works fine on most standard vanities, utility sinks, and kitchen bowls.
A standard size sink drain is only standard when the fixture, the trap, and the adapter stack line up. If you are in a basement bath rough-in or a utility sink cabinet, I would rather see a plain, correctly sized drain kit than some universal kit with five extra rings and a prayer. Buy the right nominal size, match the overflow if the sink has one, and do not force a 1 1/4-inch part onto a 1 1/2-inch run because the box looked close enough.
