Ceramic tile can work in a dry basement, especially in a laundry room or low-traffic storage area. It is usually less expensive and easier to cut, but it is more absorbent and often a little softer. Check the box for floor use rather than assuming any 12-by-24-inch tile is suitable.
Luxury vinyl tile gets recommended constantly because it is comfortable and quick to install. It can be a good basement material, but it is not the same as tile installed directly over concrete. Keep several unopened pieces in a labeled box after the job. Tile colors and surface textures can change between production runs, and a replacement piece five years later is much easier to find when you already own it.
Before ordering, measure the room, mark columns and stairs, locate floor drains, and photograph the slab. Decide where the first full tile will land, how transitions will work, and whether doors need trimming.
